How to Use Your Multimeter

How to Use Your Multimeter

1-Day Hands-On Training | Practical Electrical Diagnostics for Field Technicians

A multimeter is one of the most powerful tools a technician can carry — but only if they truly understand how to use it safely and correctly.

This one-day, hands-on course is designed to build real-world confidence in electrical measurement and troubleshooting. Students will learn how to properly use a digital multimeter to diagnose electrical systems commonly found in generator sets, transfer switches, batteries, control panels, and support equipment.

This is not a theory-heavy electrical class. It is practical, field-focused training designed to eliminate guesswork and build competence.

What Students Will Learn:

  • Multimeter functions and settings (AC/DC voltage, resistance, continuity, frequency, amperage)

  • How to safely test live circuits

  • Proper lead placement and meter setup

  • How to verify battery condition and charging systems

  • Testing fuses, breakers, switches, and relays

  • Identifying open circuits, shorts, and voltage drops

  • Understanding basic electrical troubleshooting logic

  • Avoiding common mistakes that damage meters or equipment

  • Electrical safety principles and PPE considerations

Hands-On Focus:

Students will practice on real training boards and generator-related components, performing guided diagnostic exercises that simulate common field problems.

Who Should Attend:

  • Generator Service Technicians

  • Generator Operators

  • Maintenance Personnel

  • Equipment Technicians

  • Anyone responsible for electrical troubleshooting in the field

Why This Course Matters:

Many equipment failures trace back to basic electrical issues — loose connections, blown fuses, weak batteries, control faults. A technician who understands how to properly use a multimeter can diagnose problems faster, reduce unnecessary parts replacement, and improve equipment reliability.

This course builds foundational diagnostic confidence that carries into every area of power generation service work.
